Hotel 1881 is owned by Shawfern Group Limited, a small group of boutique hotels, owned by the Murray sisters, Steph and Lauren. Unlike our sister hotel, the Dowans in Aberlour, 1881 is a quirkier space with a brighter colour palette used in the interior design. It has an atmosphere that can be described in no better way than warm and cosy and we absolutely love it.

In its short period of being open, 1881 has gained a strong reputation for providing excellent food. Our chef team, headed up by Kieran, makes absolutely everything from scratch with a strong belief that if they can make it better on site then what is the reason to buy it in? With two menus with varying styles of cuisine, one an informal menu and one a 9 course tasting menu, the consistent focus for the team is to provide the best food in Moray – with Archies, our informal menu, having been awarded a 1 AA Rosette on our first visit, we are already on a journey towards achieving excellence in that arena. But we will not sit back on our laurels – we will aim to achieve bigger and better with each accolade.

Alongside a strong foodie vibe, we have curated a sustainable wine list and an eclectic drinks list that focuses its attention on smaller producers alongside some bigger, better known brands.

We are on a journey to become one of the premier hotels in Scotland, renowned for its food and drinks offering, alongside our company ethos for professional, warm and consistent service. Since starting that journey all of 9 months ago, we have already been awarded the Family Run Business of the Year Award at the 5th Scottish Womens Awards – our team are no small part in the achievements that we have attained already.
