Welcome to Hotel 1881 at Archiestown.

Shawfern is a small boutique hotel group run by the Murray family, who also own The Dowans Hotel in Aberlour. Here in Archiestown, at Hotel 1881, we offer something a little different to our guests…

The hotel occupies a commanding position in the heart of the ‘planned village’ of Archiestown where traditional stone houses are set upon wide streets. Founded in 1760 by Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk, it now enjoys well-deserved Conservation Village status and a place in Scottish architectural history. If you are looking for Highland culture that’s a little more off the beaten track, you will find Hotel 1881 curiously luxurious and welcoming.

All 11 rooms at Hotel 1881 are uniquely-styled with sumptuous hand-picked textiles and warm lighting culminating in the perfect place to relax, reflect and unwind. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and a selection of fine toiletries. Bathrobes are also provided. Our single room is no less stylish than its double counterparts. The Intimate and Cosy rooms have king size double beds; the Plush rooms are super king. All have fresh coffee and tea making facilities, wide screen TV, WiFi and a hair dryer. A delicious Scottish breakfast is included with all our bookings and is served in the hotel restaurant. Staff are on hand should the need arise for anything else.

Our chef, Kieran McCallion brings his creativity and passion to the plate in Restaurant 88. Offering an eight-course tasting menu, he brings all that is exemplary about Scottish produce and international cuisine into one harmonious dining experience. You can expect the freshest, highest quality, locally-sourced produce from the morning’s seafood catch to freshly picked vegetables.

Archies Bar is well-stocked with unique spirits from small batch producers and local craft beers from Spey Valley. We also have a selection of fine whiskies. An informal à la carte menu is available in the bar, too. Sustainability is key to the design of both our food and drink menus.

Outside, at the back of the hotel, you’ll find a well-maintained garden. Within the walls of an historic cottage, the area is decked and comfortably furnished for guests to make the most of the spectacular view of Ben Rinnes, the highest Corbett in Moray. In the warmer months, it is a great place to enjoy a delicious al fresco lunch.

Situated only one hour away from Inverness Airport with regular flights from London, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham it is easy to make the break and escape to the unspoilt beauty of the Highlands.

Whether visiting us to embark on the Malt Whisky Trail, take time out to tee off on one of our prestigious golf courses, fish for salmon or trout on some of the fastest rivers in the country, delve into history at one of our many famous castles or simply to appreciate the breathtaking mountain landscape, Hotel 1881 is perfectly placed to provide a luxurious and comfortable stay.
